Firms need to get the measure of digital
‘Firms need to get the measure of digital’ is the lead opinion piece in PR Week’s 2nd October edition. In the article, its editor, Danny Rogers, argues that ‘owing to the nature of digital, there is no excuse for failing to measure it’. An ideal time therefore, for AMEC College to launch its latest online course, the AMEC College Intermediate Course on Social Media. Our new course is designed to give those working in the media evaluation industry a better understanding about this exciting new area and – more importantly – new skills which they can apply in day-to-day social media evaluation.
German Public Relations Association to be European conference partner
October 22, 2008
The German Public Relations Association (DPRG) was named today (22nd October, 3008) as Official Conference Partner of an international communications Summit being organized by the International Association for Measurement and Evaluation of Communication and the US Institute for Public Relations.
The first European Summit on Measurement to be held in Berlin from June 10-12, 2009, aimed at communications professionals from corporate communications, public relations, market research, and evaluation agencies. It will present best practices from business and insights from research on an international level.
Barry Leggetter, Executive Director of International Association for Measurement and Evaluation of Communication (AMEC), said: “We are delighted that the DPRG will be working with us to help organize and promote the event.
“We expect to see in Berlin delegates from all parts of the world. However the reputation and work of the DPRG in advancing the understanding and measurement of communications will, we feel sure, help us ensure strong representation from the important German communications market.”
Ulrich Nies, President of DPRG, said: “Demonstrating the value of communication is a major challenge for professionals all over Europe. International corporations and researchers based in Germany have worked in this field for many years and brought together their knowledge within the framework of the DPRG.
“We are looking forward to share this experience with colleagues, and to learn from best practices from all over the world.”
Professor Dr. Ansgar Zerfass from the University of Leipzig will represent the DPRG on the international Advisory Group to plan the event.

Global study of PR attitudes to measurement
April 30, 2009
Worldwide communications organisations are collaborating in a major global study amongst public relations and communications practitioners probing attitudes to the measurement and evaluation of public relations.
The study is sponsored by the International Association for Measurement and Evaluation of Communication (AMEC) and the Institute for Public Relations . The results will be presented at the 1st European Measurement Summit in Berlin on 10-12th June, 2009.
This study builds on similar research last carried out five years ago, and will allow the opportunity to compare shifts and changes in communications practice, and to correlate the results from different business sectors and countries.
Organisations which are collaborating in the study include: The Arthur Page Society; the IPR; ICCO, the International Communications Consultancy Organisation (ICCO) the umbrella organisation for more than 1000 agencies through their trade associations in 29 countries; the Global Alliance which represents more than 160,000 PR professionals through professional associations throughout the world; the European Association of Communications Agencies (EACA); the UK Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and the Public Relations Consultants Association of the UK.
Barry Leggetter, Executive Director of AMEC, said: “During a recession the role of measurement in public relations practice has taken on a new sense of importance in order to demonstrate proof of performance. We therefore hope ICCO members will take a few minutes to complete the study. We are working with other international trade bodies as well to give the study international scale and substance.”
The survey is being carried out by online polling specialists Benchpoint™ and is managed on behalf of AMEC and its Summit partner, the Institute for Public Relations, by Donald K Wright PhD, Professor of Public Relations in the College of Communication at Boston University; Mike Daniels, Director of Report International, Director of AMEC and a member of the IPR's Commission on Public Relations Measurement & Evaluation and Prof. Dr. Ansgar Zerfass, Institute of Communication and Media Studies Department Communication Management and Public Relations, University of Leipzig, representing the German PR Association (DPRG).
Commented Richard Gaunt, CEO of Benchpoint “The last measurement survey (in 5 languages) was the largest and most comprehensive survey of the world’s PR profession to date, and we expect this one to be even bigger”

Evaluation emerges as international growth sector
The first ever international market study of the evaluation sector has shown year on year growth and an industry optimistic about its future.
The International Business Monitor study has been carried by AMEC, the fast-growing international Association for the Measurement and Evaluation of Communication.
The study shows an international industry size of more than £25million from companies in the UK, Italy, Spain, Holland, Sweden, Australia, US, Middle East and Latin America, representing over 70% of the AMEC member companies. Highlights are:
14% year on year growth since 2004.
Clients see the value of continuous tracking: the survey shows 85%of work is continuous client business with only 15% from ad hoc assignments.
34% of clients commission multi-country assignments, rising to 48% amongst AMEC members with a turnover of more than £1 million.
84% of end clients include print media in their evaluation assignments, compared to just 29% including digital media and 5% social media.
AMEC members are optimistic of continuing growth in the sector, with 47% of member companies stating they believed the evaluation industry will continue to grow in the next 12 months and a further 32% of members reporting they felt conditions would remain unchanged.
Barry Leggetter, Executive Director of AMEC, said:
“The industry is showing strong growth, year on year as more companies recognize the important role that evaluation has to play in giving them insights into brand performance and how it compared against competitors.
“We have also seen a trend that we believe will continue internationally, with more companies in the traditional press cuttings area (PCA’s) expand to become AMEC members and provide analysis and consulting services.”
Leggetter reported that the value of the overall industry is likely to be significantly higher than stated in the report, due to a number of major firms being unable to take part this year because of M&A activity.
The full findings of the International Business Monitor study are available only to participating Full Members.
